About anime figure, I have already shared in the previous articles by means of different terminologies. It’s about the origin & meaning of it and what are the most common materials used to composite it. In this article, I would like to go further on The Most Common Types of Anime Figures – Scale Figure and Action Figure. This time would be more interesting and direct relevant to your choice of collectibles.
What are the Most Common Types of Anime Figures?
I believe you do have your favorite collectibles in your shelf and well-known which anime or game characters are they come from. Yet, do you know how the market categorizes it? By this article, I hope you could get a clear picture of anime figure categories for your better collection. This article is structured by main & sub paragraphs while each paragraph only explores one types of anime figure for your easy digest.
Scale Figure
The first types of anime figure I want to share with you all is scale figure. It should be the most popular type in the current market. Owing to the inexpensive raw material that fostering mass production. And, the high quality & pre-painted result make it very suitable for display. There are many types of anime figure can be included in this category. Let’s go into details by walking through the subcategories of it.
PVC Scale Figure
Usually, scale figure is made by PVC or ABS plastic. Some of it is mainly PVC with partially ABS to overcome its soft and easy to bend or lean characteristics. This is why the market calls it PVC scale figure. If you want to know more about the properties of PVC and ABS plastics, you are welcome referring to the article of 6 Major Types of Anime Figure – In the Sense of Its Materials.
Pre-painted Scale Figure
In the market, most of the scale figure is fully painted and assembled and is in high quality and detailed. Although it is not designed for free posing, it is one of the best types of anime figure you love to display in your shelf.
Cast-Off Scale Figure
Even though scale figure is non poseable, some of them has interchangeable or removable items. For example, faces with different expressions, hands in different forms or clothes, etc. Since almost all of them are made as female figures and can completely be stripped their clothes to show naked body, this type of scale figure is restricted for adult only.
These are the similar types of anime figures I categorized as scale figure. Meanwhile, as the name implies, anime figures of this category are made on scale from the “real” size of original character.
Let’s take an example from the character of Naruto, Haruno Sakura was 150 cm height when she was a child, while was 162 cm in the age of Naruto Shippuden. When she becomes a scale figure in one tenth proportion, her height is 15 cm and 16.2 cm respectively. How to get it? It just a simple ratio.
Child Sakura: 150 cm / 10 = 15 cm height
Teenage Sakura: 162 cm / 10 = 16.2 cm height
Generally, manufacturers do not write one tenth, they used to write 1/10 or 1:10 scale and directly use the exact dimension in centimeter or inch for their figures instead. Of course, there are different sizes of scale figure in the market roughly ranging from 1/12 to 1/4 where 1:12 scale should be the most common size among anime figure market.
One thing I want to emphasize is that the scale of anime figure is just for reference. Besides the quality, what you have to note before you purchase your favorite scale figure should be the actual size of it. Because, for example again, the actual dimensions of 1:12 scale figure of Goku and Gohan in the age of Dragon Ball Z is difference. Adult Goku is taller than child Gohan in the anime series. So, please note!
Action Figure
In terms of material, action figure is similar to scale figure. It is also made by PVC as well as ABS plastics. Nevertheless, the direction of designing this type of anime figure is totally different from scale figure. It is designed like an interactive toy holding by a transparent stand with clip. You can arbitrarily adjust its body to make different pose.
This posing feature comes from body articulation, which we call it points of articulation (POA for short) or joints. Different joints serve different movable for action figure. Such as cut join, which is mainly used for arm rotation and vertical rotation of head. T joint at the hip is used for front-to-back rotation of legs. The better one is ball joint allowing arbitrary movement of figure’s head, like slant, that is well-used than cut joint. For knee articulation, pin joint is commonly used. By the above information as well as market intelligence, worthy for categorization as action figure should basically be included one neck joint, two shoulder joints, two hip joints and rotating wrists & waist and bending knees. Next time when you consider to purchase action figure, you may take it for reference.
Another distinctive feature is comparatively abundant accessories and interchangeable items. Such as clothes, weapons like sword & gun and faces with different expressions, etc. These accessories increase the playability of action figure. You can create different poses by your own ideas. Some enthusiasts even like to sketch their drawing by different poses of an action figure.
Figma
When we talk about action figure, a popular series that cannot not to be mentioned is Figma. It is a series of Japanese action figure produced by Max Factory and distributed by Good Smile Company. It is made by PVC & ABS as well. Why it is so popular? Since the manufacturer carries through the concept of “Looks great, poses easily”! Figma does not only have high degree of playability but also very details and beauty for display.
High degree of playability comes from the unique joints of Figma, which support great torque and allowing enthusiasts to create almost all poses. It also allows flexibilities to swap accessories with different Figma figures to create a unique one of your own or even trade between collectors. For display, Figma is usually made as palm size that posing and displaying should become easier. Meanwhile, it stills maintain high quality and detailed sculpting, and in fully painted form that does not worse than scale figure for display.
Besides the influences of anime or movie, I think the above concepts greatly enhanced the popularity of this series. Perhaps that’s why sometimes people would wrongly use Figma to represent all action figures.
So far, we have walked through the most common types of anime figures, scale figure and action figure, and elaborated the similarities and differences between. Hopefully, you feel interest on this topic, in which could get some insights for selection of your favorite anime figure categories. In the next articles, I will unlock the rest of the anime figure categories for your further digest.
Surely, if you have any comments regarding the above contents, you are always welcome to post below. Thanks.
